Our residents love having a visit from Chilli, our pet dog! Chilli is a therapy dog and we are very lucky to have regular visits from her and her owner! The afternoons with Chilli are filled with lots of fuss and attention over her by residents and staff! Residents enjoy stroking Chilli and cuddling her and she loved every minute of it too!
Therapy dogs can be beneficial for the elderly as they can often improve physical and mental well being and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. This is why we love having pets in the home and encourage our local community and staff to bring in pets that can help contribute positively to the well being of the residents.
- Pet therapy can reduce the release of the stress hormone (cortisol) that can increase blood pressure.
- Petting a dog, playing with it, or going for a walk can help improve mobility.
- Improved mood as interactions with dogs can increase the release of the “feel-good” chemical (serotonin) in the brain.
- In the case of elderly with dementia, interacting with a dog can reduce agitation and evoke positive memories.
- Caring for a pet can improve confidence and self-esteem.
- Pets can provide comfort and companionship and help the elderly to feel less lonely or isolated.
If you have a pet you would like to bring to Broadmead, please get in touch! We would love to arrange a visit and it would mean the world to our residents!
