There was plenty of excitement at Bricklehampton Hall recently when we welcomed a few very special guests – a tortoise named Gerald and two fluffy baby rabbits came to visit, much to the delight of our residents!
With gentle cuddles, careful strokes, and a few tasty treats handed out, the animals brought joy, laughter, and a lovely sense of calm to the home.
Small Animals, Big Benefits
These kinds of animal interactions are not only heart-warming — they’re also great for wellbeing:
- Finger Dexterity: Stroking the soft fur of a rabbit or feeling the textured shell of a tortoise encourages fine motor movement and helps maintain flexibility in the hands and fingers.
- Feeding & Care: Offering food to the animals gives residents a sense of purpose, while supporting hand-eye coordination and grip strength.
- Emotional Comfort: Cuddling small animals can soothe anxiety, promote relaxation, and bring back warm memories — especially helpful for residents living with dementia.
- Shared Joy: The visit sparked conversation and laughter, turning the lounge into a happy hub of stories and smiles.
It was a lovely afternoon that reminded us how powerful simple, sensory experiences can be — and we’re already looking forward to the next visit from our furry (and shelled!) friends!
